Acceptance Testing and Training on new DOT WA Vessel

The Department of Transport WA (DOT WA) recently purchased a new shallow water survey vessel (Profiler II) to replace their older, decommissioned Profiler I vessel. Acoustic Imaging was contracted to assist in the multibeam echo sounder (MBES) system acceptance conducted between June 5 to 6.

The primary components of the DOT WA MBES system include:

  • R2Sonic 2022
  • Applanix POS MV Wavemaster
  • QPS QINSy
  • Sontek Castaway CTD

Acoustic Imaging assisted in confirmation of lever arm measurements, calibration of the POS MV (GAMS calibration, independent acceptance analysis of positioning and orientation system), and sonar bias measurements (Patch Test). Full reprocessing of the POS MV data was implemented prior to use in deriving final sonar bias values for Roll / Pitch / Yaw.

A short training course was also provided on the new QPS Qimera software. All acceptance data (Patch Test plus Reference Surface) were processed in Qimera and compared favourably to earlier data sets acquired on different vessels with different sonars.
